Introduction

Hello, I’m Joe Dowdall, and I am a retirement planner at Worth Asset Management. Our mission is to help people understand their unique financial picture and enjoy the wealth they’ve created. We create a plan that allows for stability through life’s many transitions.

Preparing for Retirement

One of the biggest transitions in life is entering retirement. To prepare for your golden years, let’s explore how to find purpose, health, and identity in this new phase.

Finding Purpose

In retirement, discovering purpose is essential. Transitioning out of the workforce may lead to feelings of emptiness. You can combat this by seeking meaningful activities with your newfound time and freedom. Consider volunteering for a local non-profit or church, spending time with grandchildren, or taking a new class. Engaging in activities with purpose enhances your experience rather than merely filling time.

Staying Healthy

Prioritizing mental and physical health during retirement is vital. While genetics play a role in your health as you age, there are ways to reduce risks. Exercise and diet are fundamental to maintaining good health and can be fulfilling. Consider engaging in group workouts like kickboxing, yoga, or Pilates, or join a gym for solo workouts. Any exercise is beneficial and can significantly reduce the risk of premature death.

Phasing Retirement

Adjusting to retirement can be a significant transition. Moving from a full-time career to having ample free time can be overwhelming. There’s no need to rush into retirement. Consider a phased approach: start with part-time work, gradually reduce hours, and then transition to full retirement.

Prioritizing Friendships

Retirees who build meaningful social relationships often report higher levels of happiness and health. Connecting with friends, family, and loved ones helps prevent loneliness and provides purpose. A strong support system positively influences overall happiness and can fill your time meaningfully.

Finding a Hobby

Retirement is an opportunity to explore new hobbies. Many struggle to fill their time, but engaging in hobbies adds meaning, prevents feelings of uselessness, and promotes overall happiness. Whether volunteering, taking classes, or working on DIY projects, hobbies foster new friendships and a sense of community.
